Hello Cross Stitchers, I’m Sophie

I make beginner friendly cross stitch kits for happy crafters who want to embrace their creativity through kits that bring joy.

And when I'm not stitching you'll find me enjoying the chaos that is life as a mum of boys (a four year old Henry and a three month old George). We live in Norfolk, which is where both my husband and I grew up, and our favourite weekends include a Sunday Roast at the table and a long walk that ends at the pub.

I've always been a crafter, but cross stitch is the hobby that stuck and I'm grateful that it lead me to life as a small business owner.

How did it all begin?

2019 was a year where everything changed. I left my corporate job, moved 100+ miles back to Norfolk with my husband Dan, and had our first child (all in the space of a few weeks actually).

These big changes made me realise how much I’d lost my ‘spark’ in the years leading up. I’d fallen out of love with my work, been battling with my mental health and something needed to change.

So one afternoon while I was at home with my newborn, I decided to get my thinking cap on and started writing down ideas. What could I do that would a) work flexibly around my family, b) bring me joy and c) provide us with some extra pennies.

I went back and forth for a while getting all of my ideas onto paper and when I thought I was all out of inspiration, I picked up my cross stitch to give my brain a break. Then the penny dropped.

Cross stitch + business = certain joy

That evening, once the baby was in bed, I turned to my husband and proudly announced “I’ve had an idea” and the rest, as they say, is history.

In October 2019, with a four month old, a new shiny desk in the corner of our living room and 10 simple kit designs ready to go, Sew Sophie was released into the world.

During my first month in business I proudly made 10 sales and I couldn’t believe that 10 people (most of whom were complete strangers on the internet) wanted to stitch one of MY kits.

Since that first month things have changed a LOT (read on to learn how) but I love looking back and reminding myself where it all began.

I wish I could tell 2019 Sophie just how far we’ve come. She would be so proud.
